All About Hydraulic Lifts

A hydraulic lift is an elevator or lift operated using fluid technology. The hydraulic mechanism helps in the lifting or moving objects with the pressure generated on liquid in a piston and it is this pressure or force that does the lifting job in a hydraulic lift. Hydraulic lift is used in a number of industrial applications. They are mechanical devices used to lift heavy objects, automobiles, airplanes, cars, dirt and shipping containers. Hydraulic lift technology is also used in the construction industry for moving and lifting heavy objects in the construction sites.

Rule of Physics

The hydraulic lift technology is derived from one of the physics equations, that is, pressure x area = force. The amount of pressure applied on the liquid in the piston, in turn, produces force, sufficient enough to lift and move an object.

Pascal's Law

Another scientific rule followed in hydraulic lift technology is the Pascal's Law. According to Pascal principle, the pressure contained in a closed container is the same at all points. Hydraulic lifts use this principle by combining two cylinders (one large and one small) to increase pressure for lifting objects of greater weight.

Applications of Hydraulic Lifts

Hydraulic lift technology can be found in forklifts, car lifts, hydraulic jacks, passenger lifts among many other machines. Industries which require machines to provide the force or lift exertion required to produce work make use of hydraulic lifts. Hydraulic lift technology is a critical aspect of engineering. No industrial activity is possible without this technology. Transport, construction, automotive, shipping, avionics industries depend upon it to a great extent. Hydraulic lifts are commonly used in auto-repair shops, docks, production facilities, warehouses, construction sites etc.

Care and Maintenance of Hydraulic Lifts

Hydraulic lifts require regular maintenance and care to ensure its working in a perfect manner. Improperly maintained hydraulic lifts can cause serious injury. Similarly, the hydraulic lifts should also be operated properly. The user should be given proper guidance on the operation technique. Even when the whole system is shut down, there can still be pressure in the oil, which if not handled properly, can be very dangerous. Hydraulic fluid leaks are particularly very dangerous. The required hydraulic pressure should always be maintained. Also, never overload a hydraulic lift.
