A User's Guide to Hydraulic Cylinder Troubleshooting

Hydraulic cylinders are extensively used in various heavy engineering vehicles. Just like other hydraulic machines, hydraulic cylinders too make use of pressurized hydraulic fluid such as oil to move or control a mechanized system. Though in case there happens a slightest of problem with the hydraulic cylinder, the safety of the user and the people working around it is hampered.

Here are few troubleshooting tips which can come handy while working with hydraulic cylinders.

The Problem of Noise

If your hydraulic cylinder is making excessive amount of noise or a kind of noise which is rather unnatural as per the regular sounds, then the first thing to do is to switch off the device. Make sure that the inlet line is cleaned properly in case of a noisy pump. The dirty filters too call for immediate replacement. Moreover, all the fluids have to be available in correct amount and the worn out fluids have to be replaced.

Another reason for a noisy device is the presence of air within the system. Hence, make sure that you bleed all the air out from the system and tighten the corrections which might be leaking. At times when the machinery is not put to use for a long period of time, the fluid within it tends to cool down and thus, create abnormal noises. For this, you need to let the machine warm up so that it sets back on its normal operational track sans noises.

The Problem of Excessive Heat
Excessive heat is another common problem with hydraulic systems. In such a situation one would need to replace all the dirty filters and spic clean the reservoir for breather vent on the machine. Also, look for wear and tear on all the seals and bearings so that the damaged parts can be replaced or fixed. Worn out fluid or fluid with wrong viscosity can lead to pressure problems hence, one needs to keep track of the hydraulic pressure against the recommended safety pressure.

The Problem of Worn out Rods
Manufacturing defect in rods can lead to pre-mature wearing of rods on either one side or on the opposite sides alongside the full extension mark. In fact, small imperfections can end up causing the rod wear in spots. Make sure that you check the rod lubricating fluid as a contaminated fluid can wear out the rod completely within a short span of time. Air and moisture are two elements which can harden the fluid and damage the rods.
