07 April, 2010- Hydraulic systems
are quite popular in agriculture sector these days. These machines
reduce the mechanical efforts manifold and also provide remote control
of various operations. Hydraulic systems are generally used for lifting
purposes like plowing, or to change the position of components like
combining of header or bulldozer blade. It also helps in assisting the
process of steering and braking.
Since the hydraulic machines contain hot high pressure fluids, the
worker working closely with the machine is exposed to three hazards,
namely, burns due to high pressure fluid, bruises or cuts due to
hydraulic line failure and injection of fluid into the skin.
Carelessness with Hydraulic Pinhole Leaks
The most common injury while working with hydraulic systems is the
pinhole leaks. Pinhole leaks refer to minute holes in hoses which are
almost impossible to locate with naked eye. One can only notice a damp
and oily area on the running hose and might as well run a hand or finger
on the line to find it, this is precisely when the
hydraulic fluid can be injected
into the skin just the way through a hypodermic syringe.
This type of injury can only be avoided by using a piece of cardboard
or wood rather than finger, along the hose to detect the leaks.

Mismanagement of Pressure Variants
Another major hazard
associated with hydraulic systems is the coupling of low-pressure and
high-pressure components. The mismanagement of two different pressure
variants can cost the rupturing of hose, fitting or components hence,
due attention should be paid to it. Pressure relief valves are the
ultimate solution for this particular issue. These valves help avoid the
pressure buildups and render smoothness to the working of entire system.
Though periodical testing and cleanliness of valves have to be ensured.
Maintenance of the Entire Hydraulic System
Maintenance is the
key to a long lasting machinery. The general maintenance of hydraulic
system includes:
- Recurrent check for oil leaks and worn hoses.
- Replacement of filters and keeping a check of the contaminants in
hydraulic oil.
- Avoid cylinder rod rusting by layering it with protective
lubricants.
