12 May, 2010- A solenoid valve is an electromagnetic mechanical transducer which converts an electrical signal into a mechanical output force. It is extensively used in various industries like hydraulic , refrigeration, automobile etc.
Following are some of the applications of
solenoid valve
Hydraulics and Pneumatics
In hydraulic machineries, the solenoid valves control the pressure of liquid flowing to the the cylinder thus, controlling the movement of piston or ram. Similarly in pneumatic machineries, the solenoid valves control the pressure of air flowing towards the actuator hence, controlling the actuator's action.
Refrigeration Systems
Solenoid valves are most popularly used in air conditioners or refrigeration systems. Their key role in refrigeration systems is to change the direction of the flow of refrigerant so as to derive the dual benefits of cooling in summers and heating in winters. The condensers and evaporators work in reverse order owing to the reversed flow of refrigerant courtesy solenoid valve.
Automobiles
Solenoid valves play a crucial role during the ignition of automobiles like cars and trucks. It so happens that when the ignition of a car or truck is switched on the current passes from the vehicle battery to the solenoid valve. This makes the solenoid valve to shut the bulky pair of contacts which directs the flow of current to the starter motor of the vehicle. In case the flow of current towards the solenoid is insufficient and the contacts are not closed, the vehicle would fail to start. It generally happens if the battery is low or the cables are facing some problems.
Locking
another area of usage of solenoid valves is the door locks. The door locks in offices, hotels or other high profile areas use the solenoid locking systems wherein, the valve is connected to the locking mechanism of the door. The moment the door is locked, solenoid valve discontinues with the power and uses the battery power instead. Solenoid locking systems are extensively used in vending machines, car parks and remote access systems.
