How to Choose Used Hydraulic Splitters?

Hydraulic log splitters are one of the most specialized log splitting tools, used for splitting wood and used in varied applications. Hydraulic log splitters are very expensive and in many cases, they are used at the initial stage of construction of buildings and roads. As a result, it is a good idea to go for a used log splitter if you have to use it for a limited period of time. It is advisable to get a used log splitter at a discounted price , instead of going for a new one. Here is what you should look for when choosing used hydraulic splitters:

As hydraulic splitters are used in applications where great stresses and pressure are applied in their operation so the first thing that is to be seen while going for an used splitter is to check whether the splitter and its parts are made of durable materials or not. If they are well built, they won't wear out very fast. Even if certain parts wear out, a used splitter is a better option as hydraulic components are long lasting.
When choosing a hydraulic log splitter, choose a frame made of thick steel, especially the beam. If possible, use it first and check that the beam doesnot bend much when splitting a tough log. Look for good solid welds and large high grade bolts.

A good frame will make your splitter last a long time. Certain parts may need to be replaced but this won't be very expensive, compared to the price of the new hydraulic splitter. Certain parts of a used hydraulic splitter that need to be replaced if necessary are as follows:

The engine is usually the most expensive part of a splitter. This is one part which might wear out. Make sure it is easy to start and runs smooth. If is doesnot, you nedd to replace it

Check the hydraulic components for leaks. If the cylinder, control valve, pumps are leaking, it means that these components will eventually need to be replaced or repaired. Try to choose a splitter that has no leaks. In most cases, hydraulic components can leak for a long time and still work fine. It won't cost much to replace the parts.

If the hydraulic hoses and fittings are leaking, you can simply tighten it to stop the leak. Check the condition of the hoses. Sometimes hoses may look bad but it may be that its just the outside layer and the hose can last a long time. If the hoses have deep cracks or gouges then replace them.

Open the hydraulic reservoir. Dip something in to the reservoir and observe the fluid. The fluid should be relatively clean and not black. There should not be any water in the fluid.

If your used hydrauic log splitter is a towable one, then check the the tires and make sure they still have good tread. Check that they tyres are not damaged. If your supplier allows, jack up each tire and spin it to make sure the bearings turn smooth and quiet.

All these points should give you some idea of what to look for when looking for a used splitter. Go for a solid design. Remember, the components can be replaced easily. But dont forget to include the replacement or repair costs into the price of the used log splitter.
