Hydraulic Jack Hammer

Hydraulic Jackhammer is a hydraulic tool used for breaking up rocks, concrete and pavements. Widely used for construction purposes, hydraulic jack hammers are much larger than the portable jack hammers which are pneumatic tools. Basically hydraulic jack hammers are hydraulic rock breakers or hydraulic breakers, that use a hammer with a chisel to do all the demolition tasks. This particular tool jack hammer was invented by Charles Brady King and it was operated in three types of mechanisms: pneumatic, electric and hydraulic. Almost all jackhammers which are used in construction machinery and other heavy machines are hydraulically powered. This type of jackhammer is mounted on an excavator and is known by various names as Rig Mounted, or Machine Mounted Breakers.

How does Hydraulic Jack Hammer Works?

Any kind of hydraulic machines operate using hydraulic fluid as the main source of power. A hydraulic jackhammer operates by driving an internal hammer up and down. The movement of the hammer is in such a way that it moves down first to strike the back of the bit and then moves up to return it to the original position and this cycle is repeated. This movement of the hammer is due to the force exerted on the hydraulic fluid in side the hydraulic motor, which in turn exerts force on the hammer.

Drill Bit Types in Hydraulic Jack Hammers

The actually working of hydraulic jack hammers depend on the drill attached to the machine. The drill bits on the end are interchangeable too. The different drill bits are:

• Spade: provides flat finish for concrete. It is also used for edging in asphalt or dirt
• Flat tip: provides direction control.
• Point: general breaking.
• Stake driver: used for driving concrete from stakes.
• Scabbler: finishes surface smooth.

Uses of Hydraulic Jack Hammer

A hydraulic jack hammer is a large sized jack hammer which can used against vertical walls, steep slopes and even ceilings. It can be used to break concrete which is not possible in a portable jack hammer. Hydraulic jack hammers are used for roadwork, quarrying and general demolition or construction groundwork. They are also used in mines where there is an explosion risk.
